They need two points from this match and must win by a big margin to improve their net run rate and hope other results go in their favour. India’s final Super 8 game against West Indies will then act as a virtual knockout if the Caribbean side loses against South Africa in Ahmedabad today.
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, are already being celebrated after beating heavyweights Australia and Sri Lanka, and they will play without any fear or baggage. They have nothing to lose from hereon.

Possible playing XI changes
India are likely to make a couple of changes to the playing XI. Sanju Samson is expected to return to the side. India have lost a few wickets at the top to off-spin in the ongoing tournament, and bringing in a right-hander like Samson could help change the pattern as both Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan are left-handed.
Meanwhile, Samson has not been in great form in recent months. However, he showed some promise against Namibia earlier in the World Cup, scoring 22 runs off just eight balls when he came as a replacement for Abhishek, who was recovering from stomach illness.
All-rounder Axar Patel is also expected to come back after being benched in the previous game against South Africa. Washington Sundar had played in that game and will likely be excluded tonight. Rinku Singh’s place in the playing XI is also in doubt after he left home for a family emergency ahead of the Zimbabwe game.
The Chepauk pitch, earlier known for helping spinners, is likely to be in favour of batters this time after some changes were made last year. It has been the best batting ground in the tournament so far. As per weather reports, Chennai is expected to remain clear throughout the day, and no interruptions are expected.
