Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday (February 21).
Addressing a joint press conference after the meeting, the Prime Minister said India and Brazil have benefited from their growing partnership and thanked President Lula for his continued commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. He described the relationship as a “win-win” partnership and said India is looking to expand bilateral trade beyond $20 billion over the next five years.
“I am grateful to the President for his commitment towards India,” PM Modi said, noting that Brazil is India’s largest trade partner.
He also expressed confidence that bilateral trade would soon surpass $20 billion and said stronger economic cooperation would serve the broader interests of the Global South.
Focus on technology, minerals and defence
The Prime Minister said the talks focused on cooperation across multiple sectors with shared goals and aspirations, adding that collaboration in technology and innovation would be significant not only for India and Brazil but also for the wider Global South.
He said the agreement on critical minerals and rare earths marks a major step towards building a resilient supply chain. He added that defence cooperation between the two countries is steadily expanding, describing it as a reflection of mutual trust and strategic alignment, and said both sides will continue to strengthen the win-win partnership.
Further highlighting the outcomes of the talks, he pointed to expanding defence cooperation as a sign of deepening strategic alignment and mutual confidence between the two countries.

The Prime Minister said there is significant potential for collaboration in healthcare and pharmaceuticals. India, he said, will work to increase the supply of affordable, high-quality medicines to Brazil, while promoting Ayurveda and traditional medicine to support holistic healthcare approaches.

Lula highlights shared strengths
President Lula underscored the importance of bilateral relations, saying the two countries are “not just the two biggest democracies of the Global South,” and described the partnership as “a meeting of the world’s pharmacy with the world’s barn, and a digital superpower with a renewable energy superpower”.
He added that both countries are mega-diverse societies and hubs of cultural industry, and that they share a commitment to multilateralism and peace. He said the invitation for the state visit, as well as to attend the AI Impact Summit, reflects the synchrony and mutual trust between the two nations.
