Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict LIVE updates: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey seek to defuse Pakistan-Afghanistan “open war”

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are working to contain the escalating conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan after Islamabad declared an “open war” and carried out strikes on major Afghan cities, a source familiar with the matter told AFP on Friday.

“Saudi Arabia, in coordination with Qatar, is making efforts to reduce tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions. The aim, the source added, is to de-escalate the crisis and prevent it from spiralling further.

The mediation push comes after Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced an “open war” with Afghanistan’s Taliban government, marking a sharp deterioration in relations. The declaration followed retaliatory attacks by Taliban forces on Pakistani military facilities along the Durand Line, intensifying cross-border hostilities between the neighbouring countries.

All major Kurdish opposition groups have formed a coalition aiming to overthrow Iran's Islamic Republic and seek Kurdish self-determination. Kurds, a large ethnic group without a state, see the current conflict as a chance to advance their long-standing goal of an independent homeland despite past US betrayals.
