India on Friday joined the US-led ‘Pax Silica’ initiative aimed at securing supply chains for critical technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.
As Indian and US officials signed the agreement in the presence of Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, US envoy Sergio Gor called India’s entry into the partnership one of the defining moments of the 21st century.
Gor framed the signing of the agreement as part of the broader India-US realignment and said the moment marked “two great democracies saying we will build together, not just buy” from one another.
“Today, we take the next step. India joins Pax Silica, the coalition that will define the 21st century economic and technological order,” Gor further said.
Pax Silica is the Donald Trump administration’s initiative to secure supply chains for silicon-based technologies. It was initially launched in December with eight members: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia.
The Department of State said at the time that the initiative will include securing semiconductor supply chains and explore opportunities to partner on projects in areas like connectivity and data infrastructure, computing power, advanced manufacturing, logistics, mineral refining and processing, and energy.
Vaishnaw called the agreement “very important” to secure supply chains. He went on to say that it also showed the world’s trust in India.
“We have a large talent pool and we have conducted our foreign policy in a way which creates that trust and as a part of that today the Pax Silica was signed which is very important for semiconductor supply chain, semiconductor manufacturing, chip design for getting that entire semiconductor ecosystem well established in our country,” Vaishnaw further said.

In his address as India and the United States signed the Pax Silica agreement, Gor said that the two countries carry limitless potential.
Gor said that he has engaged with officials and entrepreneurs since assuming the charge las month and he found the scale of India’s ambitions “breathtaking” but was not what struck him the most.
“What struck me most wasn’t just India’s scale, although that is breathtaking. It’s India’s resolve, the determination to chart your own course. I keep talking about the limitless potential between our two nations, and I truly mean it. From the trade deal to Pax Silica to defence cooperation, the potential for our two nations to work together is truly limitless,” said Gor.
In an apparent reference to China and a nod to American efforts to draw countries away from China-centric supply chains, Gor said that “peace does not come from hoping that adversaries play fair” but from strength and with “India’s entry into Pax Silica, we choose to win”.
